Precise Target (a startup company in Maryland) reached out to me to design several web based experiences to help major retailers deliver targeted product offers to consumers. Primary goals included:

  • Delight customers with personalized offers.
  • Drive higher customer engagement.
  • Drive greater purchase conversions.

Offers are featured at coupon sites, major publishers, and popular shopping destinations.

Key players included:

  • CEO & Founder
  • VP of Engineering
  • Product Engineering Manager
  • Platform Architect & Lead Data Scientist
  • UI / UX Designer

Each project organically and consistently flowed with Precise Target. Projects went like this:

  • Kick-off meeting to discuss high-level goals and requirements.
  • Over a 5 day period I would deep dive into research and design.
  • Create demo script, prototype, and present designs to team.
  • Make any necessary adjustments and/or create MVP designs.
  • Work with dev to make sure logic and designs are executed to spec.
  • Sketch (wireframes & user interface designs)
  • InVision (collaboration & prototype)
  • Slack (communication)
  • Google Hangouts (screen share)
  • JIRA (project management)

Mini Store

“deal” is defined as a set of products viewable in a ministore. They can be as broad as “All Men’s Dress Shoes Under $50” or as specific as a set of a few individually selected products.

Design a single page app that represents segments of products that can be filtered and sorted.

Research competitors

Next was determining workflows and global navigation for each user type. For instance, the free user lands on a home page to learn about the product and play with the tools. While registered, paid, and admin users land on a personalized dashboard. Dashboard 1st timers are given a smart wizard that allows them to setup and personalize their dashboard interface.

We architected the application so that Registered and Paid customers land on a personalized dashboard after signing in. The dashboard surfaces insights and recommendations based on user activity, most recent saved workflows, and user configured event / trigger notifications. Below are examples of different ideas I had on how we could display the Hot Leads dashboard panel.

Hot Leads allows the user to set event / trigger notifications related to a company or person. These low-fidelity and minimal effort designs helped the team have conversations around: which data points to display, in what order, in what type of layout, are sort and filter options needed, amount to display on the dashboard, etc… Ultimately helping us determine the most valuable experience.
